CCIE Voice Written Refresh v3.0

It appears that the CCIE Voice Written exam has finally been brought up to date. [See Cisco Announcement] So, if you are looking to take your written exam after October 12, 2010 make sure you have been using the v3.0 blueprint for a guide.

Looking through the new blueprint, the two major additions are Presence and all of the sections now include troubleshooting. Even though it wasn’t explicitly defined in the v2.0 blueprint, troubleshooting was pretty much assumed.

The section on Presence is as follows and I assume that it will be handled similar to how UCCX is handled, at least in the depth of knowledge required:

  • Presence Components
  • CUPS Administration
  • CUPC (Cisco Unified Presence Client)
  • Troubleshooting Presence

The update doesn’t specifically state that everything will be based on the same hardware as the CCIE-V Lab v3.0, but it is a pretty safe assumption. So, you are looking at the 7.x versions of CUCM, Unity Connections, CUCME, UCCX & Presence.

I am glad that they have finally brought the written exam up to where the lab exam is. Preparing for the written exam will now be a good jumping off point for the lab exam. I had to dump a lot of knowledge obtained by studying for the v2.0 written when started my preparation for the v3.0 lab exam. The basic underlying knowledge is the same, but where to find everything and where to configure it is completely different.

do you think the ccbootcamp written guide is still a good source to study for this? or what other options are there, as i’d like to do self education for the ccie voice written exam.

Mike – If you are planning on taking the written exam prior to Oct, 12th, then yes, I would recommend the ccbootcamp written guide. However, I would not pay the money on it if you are not going to be ready by then. Their guide is not going to cover CUCM 7.x or the big addition which is Presence. However, the rest of the topics seem to be staying the same, so it’s really your call if you want to drop the cash.

From my searching, I have not found a lot of material specific to the new version. But if you look at the training material here you should be able to piece together enough information to be prepared for the new exam.

If I come up with anything further, I will include it in a new post

Thanks for the reply, i was hoping to do the exam before oct 12, but I’m a little worried as the ccbootcamp guide gets into alot of detail on multicast etc, and tends to be missing topics such as:

    DNS
    TFTP
    POE
    IP Voice Signal Interconnect (CUBE)

and maybe others i havent noticed, or am i just not seing these topics?

  3. Mike Donaldae says:

thanks for that, i’ll have a quick look now, ive actually been on the ccbootcamp guide but when i had a look here :
    https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/docs/DOC-5279

I was worried i wasnt covering alot of the topics….

so youve passed the ccie voice written exam?

  4. Mike Donaldae says:

the ccbootcamp guide was written in 2007 or earlier, hence why i was concerned it covered only version 1 of the written exam.

Yes, I passed the exam back in January. I primarily used the Reference Sheets and Robert Webbers Study Guide. Like you I found that the CCBootCamp guide went into a lot of detail that didn’t seem necessary. I did use it, but only for a few sections.

Network World also has a pretty good article that broke down each section of the v2 blueprint and suggested what to use to study each section. http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/24374

Also, looking at the list of topics you were concerned about, they are covered in ccbootcamp’s guide
      DNS (Ch.1 Network Infrastructure)
      TFTP (Ch. 4 Call Manager)
      POE (Ch. 4 Call Manager)
CUBE (This I didn’t see, but is usually covered in H.323/SIP configuration sections)
